The cottage

A small house of its own on Faris Road.

The cottage sits behind our 1925 home on Faris Road. It was the detached garage, and we rebuilt it as a full guest house with its own entrance, a vaulted den, a real kitchen and a loft bedroom upstairs.

It has its own screened porch, garage and yard, and it's close to the shops, restaurants and grocery on Augusta Road. Our longest guests stayed more than a year while they renovated a condo downtown. They're glad to talk with you as a reference.

It's also an easy place to land if you're renovating a home in the neighborhood and want to stay steps from Augusta Circle while the work gets done.

Stays, leases and what we look for

What's included: The cottage, its garage and screened porch, the side yard and the area behind the cottage, and one assigned carport space. Other parking is free on the street.
Lease term: Six months or longer, furnished.
Utilities: A flat $200 a month covers power, gas, water, trash and Wi-Fi for normal use. Use above a monthly cap is billed separately.
What we look for: Income of at least three times the rent and a credit score of 700 or higher for each adult, with two years of on-time rent or mortgage payments.
Move-in costs: First month's rent plus a security deposit of two months' rent.
Occupancy: Up to six people.
Pets: Considered case by case since the cottage is furnished: one pet at most, with a $2,500 deposit and $150 a month in pet rent. Assistance animals are welcome and are not charged pet fees.
Smoking: Not allowed anywhere on the property.

Leases include the federal lead-based paint disclosure and EPA pamphlet, since the property dates to 1925. Full rental criteria are available on request.
